This was a last minute surprise anniversary gift for Lea. Her husband asked me for it, in secret, and the idea was so charming that I couldn't say no. Lea is a great artist and a great person, and I'm really happy I was able to do this in time.
The first anniversary is considered paper. I have no idea why, but that's what it's called. For the paper theme, I immediately thought of origami, and then I thought of paper stars. Why?
Giving someone a jar of 1000 origami stars signifies your love and commitment for them. I thought it would be fitting considering the purpose and would also fit with the character.
---------
Now for the technical stuff, if anyone is interested. *_*
This was originally done as lineart, since it was kind of rush-rush, and it had many more stars on it to make up for the lack of color. I've reduced the number of them drastically for this color version.
The lineart was all done in SAI. I wanted to simulate a paper texture with the thick, irregular lines.
For the color, I originally wanted to print it out and do watercolor, but alas! The ink for my printer is water soluble. So, I had to use solvent-based marker to try and simulate the effect. The figure and all of the stars are a mix of marker and acrylic paint. The color (lazy) background is more SAI, with Photoshop cleanup and texture.
Yeah, there is no way I could have said no to it. It was an amazingly touching idea. Lea has always been supportive, leaving insightful comments for me and posting amazing art. It's something I really appreciate, and people like her are why I'm still on DA in the first place.

Don't talk. Don't talk. It makes it crawl back up.
Ahhh, origami stars - such a charming idea! I was thinking origami stuff myself for the "paper" anniversary but the most complicate things I can make are irises and cranes, not stars. It's so cute! I love the effect of the line art and colours - it goes with the papery theme, giving it a kind of whimsical storybook feel. I especially like the colours and highlights on the wings! The whole thing really suits Kira well, and I'm touched you put such thought and effort into this (even if you say it's a quick job). I'm delighted and tired so it's hard to phrase things properly XD Thank you!
Wow. That's a beautiful picture, and it really does suit Kira. Hard to believe you made a quick job of this Mary, it looks wonderful. It reminds me of an illustration for a book, which really suits the paper theme.
